One of the better movies was Dune part 2. One of my favorite book quotes is ”fear is the mind killer”. It encourages me to do things I do not want to do or that I am scared of. I miss reading. I think all parents ought to encourage their children to read books. Because as an adult, there are a million distractions and so many other priorities. When videos are expected to be 5 - 10 minutes, reading a book seems quaint. Has anyone read Half of a Yellow Sun? I have wanted to read it for a long time. It is certainly more modern and dramatic than the old movie. I think the key scene is Daisy’s choice. She loved both of them (at times) and she chose the man who did not really love her and that she had drifted away from. I had a look at the same scene from the old movie. The film is an adaptation of a book written a hundred years ago and since then society has maintained its deep-rooted prejudices and they are shown in many details in the film… She, for example, did not love him and chose Tom because he was born into a rich and influential family. The film shows that there is a difference between belonging to the "natural elite" (include in this education, cultural heritage, legitimacy of wealth, social relations), while the origin and wealth achieved by Gatsby could have been obtained in a dubious way... Yeah, it can be analyzed from many angles. It is one of the many books I remember from school. I agree there are still some of the same prejudices, though I do not think it is as bad as it used to be. Maybe I am just not exposed to it, I do not know. My parents divided everyone up into groups. A doctor was worth more than a teacher, a company owner more than a doctor, etc. They had a hierarchy where europeans were on top, below them followed asians, but asians were subdivided into further subgroups, and so on and so forth. They pretended to accept my ex wife but she did not look right, though she had a good education, job, etc. I felt like applying an appropriate amount of blunt force to my parents.
